Roughly 40% of Walt Disney World visitors also visit Universal Orlando — usually on the same trip. The instinct is to split the days evenly: 3 Disney days, 2 Universal days. That's not the optimal sequence.
Here's the 5-day Orlando strategy we recommend for mixed trips.
Day 1 — Universal Studios Florida
Why open with Universal: rope drop momentum builds for the trip ahead. Most Disney visitors arrive in Orlando on Day 1 with a half-day of energy. Universal Studios is the smaller of the two original Universal parks, doable in a half-day.
Hit:
- Diagon Alley (Harry Potter)
- Escape from Gringotts
- The Simpsons Ride
- Revenge of the Mummy
- Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon
Lunch at Leaky Cauldron (Diagon Alley). Don't try to do Islands of Adventure today.
Day 2 — Islands of Adventure
Full day at the bigger of the two original Universal parks.
Hit:
- Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Hogsmeade (Hogwarts Express to Diagon Alley if you have Park-to-Park)
- Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure (best ride at Universal — book early)
- Forbidden Journey
- Jurassic Park River Adventure
- Velocicoaster
- Spider-Man (Marvel area)
Express Pass strongly recommended (or stay at Premier hotel for free unlimited Express).
Day 3 — Epic Universe
Universal's third park (opened 2025) gets its own day. Five themed lands, 8+ headliners.
Hit:
- Super Nintendo World (Mario Kart, Yoshi's Adventure)
- How to Train Your Dragon (Hiccup's Wing Gliders)
- Dark Universe (Monsters Unchained)
- Wizarding World — Ministry of Magic (Battle at the Ministry)
- Celestial Park (Stardust Racers — the must-ride)
This is when transitioning to Disney requires a hotel change. End Day 3 by moving to a Disney resort.
Day 4 — Magic Kingdom
After 3 days of Universal, Disney's Magic Kingdom hits differently. The contrast accentuates Disney's strengths.
Standard Magic Kingdom playbook:
- Rope drop priority: Peter Pan's Flight, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
- Lightning Lane Multi Pass for 3 headliners
- Lunch at Be Our Guest or 'Ohana
- Afternoon parade and breaks
- Evening: fireworks, late ride round
Full day at Magic Kingdom.
Day 5 — EPCOT or Hollywood Studios + departure
Final day. Choose one park based on family interests:
EPCOT if:
- You want food + cultural experiences (World Showcase)
- Older kids (8+)
- Cosmic Rewind is a priority
Hollywood Studios if:
- Younger kids who love Toy Story Land
- Star Wars enthusiasts
- You want fireworks (Fantasmic!)
Either way, plan a half-day so you can fly out late afternoon.
Why this sequence works
-
Energy ramp: Universal Day 1 (half) → Universal Day 2 (full intensity) → Universal Day 3 (Epic Universe peak) → Disney Day 4 (full energy renewal) → Disney Day 5 (taper)
-
Park-to-park ticket optimization: Days 1-2 use the Universal Park-to-Park ticket (Hogwarts Express access). Day 3 separately covers Epic Universe.
-
Hotel transitions match: Stay at Universal Premier hotel Days 1-3 (free Express Pass). Move to Disney resort Days 4-5.
-
Avoid afternoon park-hopping fatigue: Each day is one park. Don't try to do Magic Kingdom morning + Animal Kingdom afternoon. That's exhausting.
Universal hotel decision
For 3 Universal days, the math strongly favors Premier hotel:
- 3 nights at Hard Rock or Royal Pacific or Portofino: $1,500-$2,400
- Includes unlimited Express Pass for all 3 days
- Compare to purchasing Express Pass: $180/person/day × 4 people × 3 days = $2,160
You'll spend nearly the same and get the Premier hotel experience.
Disney hotel decision
For 2 Disney days, hotel choice matters less than at Universal:
- Multi Pass works regardless of hotel tier
- Distance from parks varies
- Value Disney resort (Pop Century) or Moderate Disney resort (Caribbean Beach) are both fine
If you're already getting Premier Universal for Days 1-3, splurging on Disney Deluxe for Days 4-5 is probably overkill. Save for Disney Moderate.
The Park Hopper question
For this 5-day itinerary, you don't need Disney Park Hopper. Each Disney day is one park. Save the $80-$100/ticket Park Hopper upgrade.
How we coordinate mixed trips
Mixed Disney + Universal trips are one of the most-requested service types we offer. The cognitive overhead of switching between Universal Express Pass logic and Disney Lightning Lane Multi Pass logic — twice per trip — is genuinely exhausting for DIY families.
We charge $150/hour for either park (no premium for Universal coverage), and we offer 10% off when booking Disney + Universal days together (details on our Universal Orlando page).
For a family doing this 5-day itinerary with 4 days of guided service: about 32 hours × $150 = $4,800, minus 10% mixed discount = $4,320. For a trip already costing $8,000-$12,000, that's reasonable insurance.
