Universal Orlando · Epic Universe

Just came from Disney? Universal is different.

Express Pass instead of Lightning Lane. Three parks (Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and the brand-new Epic Universe). Different rope-drop strategy. Different food landscape. Different hotel benefits. Most families burn their first day at Universal figuring it out — we make sure you don't.

What changes vs. Disney World

Same Orlando, completely different playbook.

Is Universal Express Pass worth it?

For most families, Universal Express Pass is worth it on peak-crowd days (holidays, summer, spring break) and less critical on off-season weekdays. Express Pass costs $90–$240 per person per day depending on date and park, and skips the standby line once per attraction. Premier-tier Universal hotels (Portofino Bay, Hard Rock, Royal Pacific) include unlimited Express Pass free for hotel guests — often worth $1,000+/day for a family of four and effectively decides the hotel choice. Epic Universe, which opened May 2025, has its own Express Pass tier structure and is currently the highest-priority Express Pass purchase due to crowd levels still stabilizing.

Express Pass ≠ Lightning Lane

Universal's Express Pass is included free for guests of select Universal hotels — but costs $90–$240 per person otherwise, with a one-time-per-ride limit. Knowing when to use it on which ride is the entire game.

🏨

Hotels matter more

Premier-tier Universal hotels include unlimited Express Pass — sometimes that's worth $1,000+/day for a family of 4. We help you decide whether the hotel upgrade beats buying Express Pass.

🌌

Epic Universe is new

Opened May 2025. Five new themed worlds (Super Nintendo World, Wizarding World's Ministry of Magic, How to Train Your Dragon, Dark Universe, Celestial Park). Crowd patterns still settling. Strategy changes weekly.

🍔

Food + drinks landscape

Universal has fewer table-service options than Disney but much better counter-service variety. Butterbeer at Wizarding World is the must-do — and there are 4 different formats. We'll tell you which is worth it.

🎢

Thrill ratings, not princesses

Universal skews older and more intense. Hagrid's coaster, Velocicoaster, Hulk, and the new Stardust Racers (Epic Universe) are world-class thrills. Wrong order = motion sickness disaster.

📅

No ADRs, no 60-day window

Universal dining is much easier than Disney — most restaurants accept walk-ups or same-day reservations. But the headliner experiences (Mythos lunch, Toothsome) still benefit from advance planning.

Mixed Disney + Universal trips

About 40% of WDW visitors also visit Universal.

If your trip mixes both, you need someone who masters both systems. Lightning Lane Multi Pass on Monday, Express Pass strategy on Wednesday — switching mental models mid-trip kills momentum.
