The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade: what is actually worth skipping the line for?
The short answer
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure has 3 attractions we track, and 2 of them offer Universal Express Pass. The most visited land at Islands of Adventure, and the one where the longest line on the whole property cannot be bought past at any price. On our honest reading only one — Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey — is a clear case for paying to skip the line. 3 of the 3 have a height requirement, the tallest being 48".
What to expect in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade
Three attractions, and the thing that defines the land is which of them Express covers. Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure is excluded from Universal Express — it joined briefly in 2025 and came back out on 1 July 2026 — so standby is the only line, and on a summer morning it is the longest wait at Universal Orlando. Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is Express-eligible and still pulls an hour-plus most afternoons. Flight of the Hippogriff is a junior coaster with one short train, included in Express, and over in well under a minute.
Is Universal Express Pass worth it here?
Express is worth having in this land and worth understanding before you buy it. It does nothing at all for Hagrid's, which is the ride people buy it for, so anyone who expects to skip that line will be disappointed at the entrance. It does real work on Forbidden Journey, especially on a re-ride once you have walked the castle. It is wasted on Flight of the Hippogriff, whose line is long because of where it sits rather than how good it is — families arrive for the other two, find they are too short or too nervous, and this is what is left.
Worth the money in this land
- ·Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey — Usually worth Express, 60–90 min at peak
Offers a pass, but rarely earns it
- ·Flight of the Hippogriff — 30–60 min at peak
No paid line-skip offered at all
These attraction is outside Universal Express Pass, so the only levers are time of day and patience.
- ·Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure — 90+ min at peak
The order we would walk it
Be at the Islands of Adventure turnstiles before opening and walk — do not run — straight to Hagrid's while the rest of the park drifts toward VelociCoaster. That first ride is the single highest-value decision of the day here. Ride Forbidden Journey standby the first time rather than on Express, because the walk through Hogwarts Castle is one of the best-themed queues in Orlando and Express skips a good chunk of it. Leave Hippogriff for the first hour, when Hogsmeade is still filling.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade with young children
This is the cruellest height split in the Wizarding World. Hagrid's and Forbidden Journey both require 48 inches; Flight of the Hippogriff needs 36. So a child between those two numbers rides exactly one of the three, and it is the one that lasts under a minute. The Hippogriff is the honest benchmark to use before you plan anything else: a child uneasy on it is not ready for Hagrid's. Forbidden Journey has a second gate beyond height — a seat-size check with test seats outside the entrance, and using one before you queue saves an hour.
Height is checked at each attraction entrance rather than once at the gate, so a borderline measurement is worth planning around. Our ride height guide works the other way round from this page — it starts from your child's height and lists what opens up — and the crowd calendar covers the other half of the problem: which weeks make these queues worth paying for in the first place.
Every attraction in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade, ride by ride
The Hogwarts Castle ride still pulls an hour-plus most afternoons, and the Express line here buys back something the standby line genuinely gives you: the walk through the castle. That is a real trade-off — the queue is one of the best-themed spaces in Orlando, and Express skips a good chunk of it.
Ride standby the first time so you get the castle walk-through, then use Express for the re-ride if you have it. Two practical warnings that cost people more time than the line does: this is a motion-simulator arm ride that makes a meaningful share of adults queasy, and the restraint system has a seat-size check at the entrance — test seats are outside, and using one before you queue is the difference between a five-minute detour and an hour wasted.
This is the clearest wasted Express tap in Hogsmeade. It is a junior coaster with one short train and a circuit that is over in well under a minute, so capacity is low and the posted wait climbs on ride length that cannot possibly justify it. What keeps the line full is location rather than demand: families walk into Hogsmeade for Hagrid's and Forbidden Journey, find they are too short or too nervous for both, and this is the only thing left they can all do.
Ride it standby in the first hour after the park opens, when Hogsmeade is still filling toward Hagrid's, and never spend an Express tap here — put those on Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and Forbidden Journey, which are the two rides in this land where the wait is genuinely unfixable. At 36 inches this is the lowest bar in the Wizarding World, so it is also the honest benchmark for a first-timer: a child who is uneasy on this one is not ready for Hagrid's at 48 inches.
This is the one ride at Universal Orlando where the honest answer is that you cannot buy your way past the line. Hagrid's briefly joined Universal Express in 2025, then came back out of it on July 1, 2026 — Universal's stated reason was flow, and the mechanics back that up: two seat types, a long dispatch cycle and a launch sequence that punishes any interruption. Standby is the only line, and on a summer morning it is the longest wait on property.
Treat Hagrid's as a rope-drop ride and nothing else. Be at the Islands of Adventure turnstiles before opening, walk — do not run — straight through Hogsmeade, and ride it first while the rest of the park is still filtering toward VelociCoaster. If you miss that window, the second-best wait of the day is usually the last hour before close, when the queue stops taking new guests at park close but keeps running out whoever is already in it.
