Frontierland: what is actually worth skipping the line for?

4 attractions2 with Lightning Lane2 with a height rule

The short answer

Frontierland at Magic Kingdom has 4 attractions we track, and 2 of them offer Lightning Lane. The highest ratio of pass-worthy rides to total rides at Magic Kingdom — and both of them are gated at 40 inches. On our honest reading 2 are clear cases for paying to skip the line (Tiana's Bayou Adventure, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad). 2 of the 4 have a height requirement, the tallest being 40".

What to expect in Frontierland

Frontierland is small and top-heavy. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Tiana's Bayou Adventure are both genuine headliners, both require 40 inches, and Tiana's is sold à la carte rather than inside the Multi Pass. The other two tracked attractions, the Country Bear Musical Jamboree and Tom Sawyer Island, are low-wait and offer no line-skip at all.

Is Lightning Lane worth it here?

The guide's honest take

Both headliners are worth it, which is rare. Tiana's Bayou Adventure is the newer of the two and prices as the park's second-hardest ride to get on; Big Thunder is a dependable pre-booked slot. Neither the Country Bears nor Tom Sawyer Island offers a pass, and neither needs one.

Worth the money in this land

No paid line-skip offered at all

These 2 attractions are outside Lightning Lane, so the only levers are time of day and patience.

The order we would walk it

Pick one of the two headliners to rope-drop and buy or book the other. They are a two-minute walk apart, which makes Frontierland the easiest land in the park to clear early. Tom Sawyer Island is a raft ride away and swallows forty minutes happily — save it for the middle of the day when it is the only attraction in the park that gets better as the crowd thins out, and know that the rafts stop running before park close.

Frontierland with young children

Forty inches is the wall here, and it is the whole land: a child below it rides neither headliner and is left with a bear show and a raft to an island. If your party straddles 40 inches, Frontierland is the land where splitting up costs you least — the two gated rides are close together and the two ungated ones take time to do properly.

Height is checked at each attraction entrance rather than once at the gate, so a borderline measurement is worth planning around. Our ride height guide works the other way round from this page — it starts from your child's height and lists what opens up — and the crowd calendar covers the other half of the problem: which weeks make these queues worth paying for in the first place.

Every attraction in Frontierland, ride by ride

Tiana's Bayou AdventureAlmost always worth it
Lightning Lane Single Pass (à la carte)90+ min at peakNeeds 40"

The reimagined log flume is a top draw with long, hot standby lines.

Tactic

Single Pass or rope drop — and expect it to be a Single Pass on warm days when everyone wants to get wet.

Lightning Lane Multi Pass — book this one first60–90 min at peakNeeds 40"

A family-favorite coaster with steady 60+ minute waits during peak hours.

Tactic

Pair it with Splash-area rides in one Multi Pass window to save walking.

Country Bear Musical JamboreeNo Lightning Lane offered
Not offered — standby line onlyunder 30 minNo height rule

No Lightning Lane is offered here and none is needed. The Country Bears play to a large seated theatre on a rotating showtime, so the whole waiting audience walks in together when the doors open and the room empties completely at the end — a posted twenty minutes is almost always just the gap until the next performance, not a queue you are inching through. The show itself was reworked in 2024: the bears are the same animatronic cast Magic Kingdom has had since opening day, but the set list was rebuilt around country reinterpretations of Disney songs rather than the original numbers, and it runs a little under fifteen minutes.

Tactic

Check the showtime posted at the entrance and time your Frontierland lap around it rather than standing in the lobby; if you miss one, the next is usually within half an hour. Fold it into the same loop as Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and the Frontierland shops, because that corner of the park is where you will already be. Two honest notes. If you have been away for years and are bringing back a specific memory of the old show, know in advance that the songs have changed — the animatronics and the room have not, but the setlist has. And it is a fully seated, air-conditioned quarter of an hour with no height requirement and nothing frightening in it, which makes it a genuinely good recovery stop for a group with small children who have run out of afternoon. Your Multi Pass selections belong on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Haunted Mansion and Peter Pan's Flight.

Tom Sawyer IslandNo Lightning Lane offered
Not offered — standby line onlyunder 30 minNo height rule

Tom Sawyer Island has no Lightning Lane because there is no ride and no queue to skip. It is an island in the middle of the Rivers of America reachable only by raft from Frontierland, and once you are across it is a self-guided play space — caves and tunnels, a barrel bridge, rock paths and a frontier fort to climb through. Capacity on the island itself is enormous and you set your own pace, so the only bottleneck in the whole experience is the raft, which runs continuously and rarely backs up for more than a few minutes. The one hard constraint is daylight: the island closes around dusk, well before Magic Kingdom does, which is the single fact most likely to catch a family out.

Tactic

Plan it as a mid-afternoon release valve for children who have been standing in lines all morning, and budget forty-five minutes to an hour — less than that and it is not worth the raft trip. Two practical rules save most of the frustration here. Strollers cannot come across, so anything you cannot carry has to stay on the mainland, and a child who still needs the stroller is probably the wrong age for this. And the island closes at dusk regardless of park hours, so if your plan is fireworks-then-island you do not have a plan; go before the late afternoon. Bring a flashlight or use a phone for the caves if anyone in your group is uneasy in the dark, wear shoes that can handle uneven rock and a few stairs, and expect to lose sight of a fast-moving eight-year-old more than once — the sightlines are deliberately poor. There is no height requirement and nothing thrilling. Spend your Multi Pass selections on Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Haunted Mansion.
